Bhupi Sherchan – Hinda Hindai

  1. All in an instant

    Like hiker sudden laughs
    at something he remembers,
    Like a farmer’s happiness goes
Roving in the fields with ripe grains,
Your smile, beloved, feels as if
    It’s only meant for me.

I’ve loved Bhupi Sherchan’s poety. Although my understanding of written Nepali is scanty and clearly inadequate to understand Nepali literature fully, let alone translate it; I have quite shamelessly attempted the above translation. The title hinda hindai literally means as one is walking – shows that instance of walking – but in that, I feel, a subtle idea of abruptness or and instantaneous idea is hinted. Therefore, I have chosen to mistranslate the topic as All in an Instant.
